• Jibboom Housing Project Hearing Tonight: The 62-unit Residences at Jibboom mixed-use housing project goes before the Truckee Planning Commission tonight at 5:00pm at Truckee Town Hall. The project has been in process for more than eight years, with delays tied to legal disputes, regulatory review, and community pushback. Town staff is recommending approval with 80 conditions, making this a potentially major step for a long-running housing proposal near downtown Truckee.

• Fire Season Tracking Early: Local fire officials say the basin is already running one to two months ahead of normal fire season conditions. Snowpack is far below average, grasses are curing early, and the recent April storm did not meaningfully change the outlook. Residents should complete defensible space work now, clean up pine needles and ladder fuels, and review evacuation plans before the busy Memorial Day stretch.

• Burn Permits Required: As of May 1, CAL FIRE burn permits are required for all hazard-reduction burning in Nevada, Placer, Yuba, and Sierra counties. Permits are free, but residents still need to confirm burn-day status with the local air district before lighting. With fire season arriving early, this is a good week to handle remaining pile burning safely and legally.

• Trail Closures and Fuels Reduction Work: Multiple wildfire risk-reduction projects are active around Tahoe National Forest and the Truckee area this season, including work near Alpine Meadows, Big Chief, Cabin Creek, and Alder 89. Some Forest Service roads and trails may temporarily close during active operations, so check project updates before heading out for a ride, run, hike, or dog walk.

• High Fives Foundation Turns 20: Twenty years ago this week, Roy Tuscany suffered the life-changing spinal cord injury that eventually sparked the High Fives Foundation. The Truckee-based nonprofit has grown from one athlete’s recovery journey into a national organization supporting more than 1,000 athletes recovering from life-changing injuries.

• Truckee Soccer Team Heads to Sweden: Eleven Truckee U12 soccer players are preparing to compete in the Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden this July, the world’s largest international youth soccer tournament. The team is still fundraising to cover travel and tournament costs, with a goal of getting local kids onto a global stage.

• Tahoe Knight Monsters Playoff Run Ends: The Tahoe Knight Monsters made the Kelly Cup Playoffs and faced the top-seeded Kansas City Mavericks in the Mountain Division Finals. Kansas City swept the series, ending Tahoe’s second season, but the playoff appearance was still a big milestone for the young Stateline-based ECHL franchise.

• Sand Harbor Boat Launch Open, But No Docks: Sand Harbor State Park’s boat launch opened for the season on May 1, but the docks are out of service after high winds and rough lake conditions damaged them during an April storm. Boaters should expect a more limited launch experience until Nevada State Parks completes repairs and returns the docks to service.

• Truckee Housing Element Draft Coming: The Town of Truckee is preparing to release the draft 2027–2035 Housing Element for public review. The Housing Element is the part of the General Plan that outlines policies and programs for meeting Truckee’s housing needs over the next eight-year cycle. Community meetings are scheduled for May 27, June 2, and June 23, with the first draft expected to be submitted to the state later this summer.

• Donner Lake Summer Rules Tighten Up: Ahead of the busy summer season, Truckee is rolling out stricter traffic and parking measures around Donner Lake. The town is proposing to lower the Donner Pass Road speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph, add clearer bike-lane striping, increase illegal parking fines, and use large boulders to prevent shoulder parking in problem areas. The goal is to reduce speeding, blocked bike lanes, and overcrowded roadside parking around one of Truckee’s busiest summer corridors.

Warm and calm Monday gives way to a quick-hitting midweek system.

Expect increasing winds Tuesday (30–40 mph common, higher in exposed areas), followed by rain and snow showers with snow levels around 6,500–7,000 ft, briefly dropping lower Tuesday night. Light accumulations are possible at pass level, with slushy conditions at times, but high sun angle will limit road impacts.

Showers taper Wednesday with a slight chance of thunderstorms, then conditions improve quickly. Thursday through the weekend looks dry, milder, and much more favorable for outdoor plans. The pattern stays active heading into late April, so more systems are possible.

• Spring showed up early this year and it’s already shutting things down. Homewood is done, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Tahoe Donner wrapped over the weekend, and Diamond Peak is next. Palisades is still hanging on with 15 lifts spinning, as is Northstar.

• The Toyota U.S. Freestyle Championships return to Palisades Tahoe March 26–29. Come check out some of the best mogul skiers in the world competing on Siberia.

• The heat wave isn’t letting up. Highs are pushing into the upper 60s all week with potential record temps early in the week. No storms in sight this week, but the 10 day window shows some signs of life. Maybe a Miracle April 🙏

• Leadership shift in Kings Beach: Darcy Parrillo has been named District Manager. She’ll be leading economic development, business support, and placemaking efforts in the district moving forward.

Not stoked to start including this already, but mountain biking season is officially on.

Jackass is good to go and already seeing early season traffic. Most riders are climbing up El Burro as the road has some snow still, but apparently it is passable.

Editor’s note: I’ll dust the bike off and get out this week to provide some first hand accounts for you.

Resorts closing early across Tahoe
This is the (unfortunate) story right now. Multiple Tahoe ski areas are shutting down weeks early after one of the warmest March stretches on record, with temps 20–25 degrees above normal driving rapid snowmelt and cutting the season short across the region.

Record heat hits the Sierra
Temperatures in parts of Tahoe pushed into the 70s this week, breaking March records and accelerating snowmelt. This heat is the main reason why conditions are deteriorating so quickly across the mountains.

Fatal plane crash near Olympic Valley
A small aircraft headed for Truckee Tahoe Airport crashed Sunday evening just outside Olympic Valley. The pilot, believed to be the sole occupant, was found deceased after a coordinated search involving CHP Air Ops and local search and rescue teams. The crash occurred in remote terrain and is now under investigation by the FAA and NTSB.

This is not a normal March week. Strong high pressure is building over the region and will push temperatures to levels more typical of early June. Truckee is forecast to hit highs of 70F Monday, climbing to 73-75F Tuesday through Friday. NOAA’s Reno forecast office says records will be shattered mid-week, with Reno having an 85% chance of setting an all-time March temperature record.

This means rapid snowmelt and fast-running waterways. Stay out of area creeks and rivers, which will be running cold and high.

The warm, dry pattern holds through next weekend. There are early hints of a pattern change bringing wetter weather in the final week of March, but nothing confirmed yet.

• Paul Bancroft named Director of Neighborhood Services and Sustainability. The Town of Truckee selected Bancroft, a Truckee native who spent 18 years at Sierra Community House including 11 as Executive Director, to lead the department overseeing housing, solid waste, sustainability, short-term rentals, and the IDEA program. He starts in April.

• Truckee approves $477K for new library design. The Town Council voted unanimously to fund the next phase of design for the planned $38 million library, which will advance building permits and finalize construction documents. The Friends of the Truckee Library reports $8.5 million in pledges toward the project.

• Best of North Tahoe and Truckee nominations are open through March 25. The Sierra Sun’s annual community recognition contest is underway. Nominate your favorite local businesses and people.

• TTUSD Hope Week runs March 16-20. The school district’s Hope Squad is hosting its annual week of community connection, resilience, and mental health awareness across Tahoe Truckee schools.

• Granite View Condominiums draft EIR open for public comment through April 20. • Lawsuit challenges USDA rule change affecting Tahoe National Forests. The Center for Biological Diversity and Sierra Club are suing the USDA over a 2025 rule change that eliminates public comment requirements before approving logging, mining, and other projects on national forests. About 78% of the land around Lake Tahoe is National Forest.

AVALANCHE FORECAST

The Sierra Avalanche Center publishes daily forecasts for the Central Sierra Nevada. With the current warm, dry pattern and no new snow, avalanche danger is expected to be low this week. That said, warm temperatures can trigger wet avalanche activity on steep, sun-exposed terrain during afternoon hours. Check the daily forecast before any backcountry travel.

Monday: Periods of rain and high-elevation snow continue into the afternoon as low pressure moves east. A few isolated thunderstorms are possible early. Snow levels hover around 5,500–6,000 feet north of US-50 and 6,000–7,000 feet south of US-50, rising slightly this afternoon. Additional precipitation amounts remain light, generally a trace to 0.20”. Highs in the 50s for lower elevations, 40s in the Sierra.

Tuesday: A brief break in the action. Drier conditions return with temperatures warming 5–10 degrees compared to Monday.

Wednesday–Thursday: A midweek cold front brings another round of light valley rain and mountain snow, mainly north of US-50. Snowfall accumulations look limited to the highest peaks. Gusty to strong winds are possible, especially south of US-50 and along US-395 near Mono County, where gusts could exceed 50 mph in wind-prone areas. Showers taper off Thursday morning with cooler air settling in.

Friday–Sunday: Dry weather returns with a gradual warming trend. Highs climb into the 50s and 60s by Sunday. Breezy northerly winds are possible Friday, but confidence is still low.

Search and rescue teams have completed recovery operations following the Feb. 17 avalanche near Castle Peak. The tragedy has deeply impacted the Truckee ski and backcountry community. Local officials have announced vigil gatherings and ongoing grief-support opportunities.

Backcountry users are urged to monitor avalanche forecasts and respect current area closures. The Sierra Avalanche Center forecast remains Considerable (Level 3) as of Monday morning, with danger expected to rise Tuesday.

Wind slabs, lingering deep weak layers, and warming temperatures are creating unstable conditions, especially on NW–N–NE aspects.

Backcountry travel is not recommended in avalanche terrain, particularly where recent avalanches, cracking, or collapsing have been observed.

Keely Cashman and AJ Hurt (Team Palisades Tahoe) represented Team USA in the debut of the Olympic Team Combined alpine skiing event, a new format designed to showcase both speed and technical skill in a single competition. They finished 7th overall in the event.

Hanna Percy finished third in her 1/8 final and did not advance in Women’s Snowboard Cross.

JC Schoonmaker made the semifinals in the Mens Sprint before being eliminated.

Weather Outlook

Winter is back! After a mild and dry weekend, the pattern shifts Tuesday with the first meaningful snow in over a month. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Tuesday 4pm as a cold front brings 4-8 inches to base elevations, with 7-12 inches possible at upper elevations by Thursday morning. Travel impacts are most likely Tuesday afternoon and evening, especially over Donner Summit.

Snow levels start high Monday evening around 7000 feet but drop below base elevations by Tuesday morning and continue falling to 4000 feet Tuesday night. This creates ideal conditions for light, powdery snow by Wednesday morning. Temperatures cool significantly with highs in the 30s Tuesday and Wednesday.

A larger, colder storm system is forecast for next weekend through the third week of February, potentially bringing the coldest and snowiest pattern of the season.
