Happy Monday everyone 👋
Ski movie season is kicking into in full swing, Halloween is coming to Tahoe City, and there are lots of ways to get involved around town this week. We’ve also got a change in the weather coming, with rain and higher-elevation snow in the forecast.
Here’s what’s happening this week in Truckee/North Tahoe!
This week at a glance
Local ski crews hit the big screen. Way She Goes plays Wednesday at the Art Haus, followed by Low Tide at Alibi on Thursday.
Get ready for the backcountry. Cody Townsend and David Reichel join Wednesday’s avalanche education evening in Truckee.
Zombies take over Tahoe City on Friday. Costumes, downtown festivities, and a free shuttle from Olympic Valley and the West Shore.
Chocolate, wine, and Dead Winter Carpenters. Sierra Community House’s annual fundraiser returns Saturday in Incline Village.
Last week’s Local Spotlight
Ski For The Love: Keeping ski movies fun
A few beers around a coffee table became a Tahoe ski film project. Five years later, the Ski For The Love crew is still chasing snow and keeping ski movies fun.
I spoke with Josh Anderson about how it started, the people behind the project, and their latest film, Way She Goes. Make sure to check out their screenings this week at Art Haus on Wednesday and the Moment factory in Reno on Friday.
Local news and community updates
California voters: today is the regular registration deadline
Monday, October 19, is California’s deadline to register online or have a paper registration postmarked for the November 3 election. If you’ve moved or need to update your registration, take a minute today.
Miss the deadline? Eligible voters can still use conditional voter registration after today, including on Election Day. Register, check your status, or find the details here.
Mt. Rose fires up snowmaking
Mt. Rose became the first Tahoe resort to start snowmaking for the 2026–27 season and is targeting a November 6 opening, weather and conditions permitting.
Navigation Center gets support for a second year
Following the meeting previewed last week, Truckee Town Council and Tahoe Forest Hospital District voted unanimously October 13 to continue the Navigation Center pilot.
Each approved $235,000 for year two, contingent on a state grant to purchase the building. The center reported 96% bed utilization during the reporting period, while some neighboring residents continued to raise concerns about its location. Moonshine Ink has the full report.
East Shore improvements move forward
The Tahoe Transportation District reports 38 additional parking spaces at the East Shore Trailhead and 130 spaces at Chimney Beach, along with a transit stop and lighted highway crossing there.
Design is also underway for the next nearly two-mile trail segment from Sand Harbor toward Chimney Beach. That extension is still in planning. See the project updates.
