Storm Chances Return, Terrapin Roadshow Comes to Truckee, and Tahoe City Planning Restarts

Hi everyone, hope you had a nice weekend. We have two more hot, sunny days before cooler weather and afternoon storm chances arrive Wednesday. There are also several important community updates and a busy weekend led by the Terrapin Roadshow in Truckee. Let’s get into it!
THIS WEEK AT A GLANCE
Sunny and warm weather Monday and Tuesday gives way to afternoon shower and thunderstorm chances Wednesday through Saturday. Highs fall from the mid-80s early in the week to the mid-70s by Thursday.
Placer County is restarting the planning process for the former Dollar Creek Crossing site. A community survey is open through Sept. 18, with an in-person meeting scheduled for Sept. 2.
Investigators now say 28 pine trees have been intentionally poisoned at Burnt Cedar Beach since 2022, including 16 discovered this year.
The Terrapin Roadshow comes to Truckee Saturday and Sunday, bringing Grahame Lesh, Amy Helm, Stu Allen, Reed Mathis, Natalie Cressman, Jennifer Hartswick and more to the Salty Gebhardt Amphitheater.
The Truckee River is still fishing well in the mornings, but upper sections are reaching stressful temperatures by noon. Bring a thermometer and give the fish a break as the water warms.
WEATHER OUTLOOK
A hot, sunny start gives way to a cooler and more unsettled pattern beginning Wednesday. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible from Wednesday through Saturday, so anyone heading onto exposed trails, ridgelines or the lake should keep an eye on building clouds.
Monday, Aug. 10: Sunny, high near 86°F. Southwest winds may gust to 25 mph.
Tuesday, Aug. 11: Sunny, high near 84°F. Low around 47°F.
Wednesday, Aug. 12: 30% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. High near 80°F.
Thursday, Aug. 13: Chance of showers and afternoon thunderstorms. High near 75°F.
Friday, Aug. 14: Chance of afternoon thunderstorms. High near 74°F.
Saturday, Aug. 15: Chance of showers and thunderstorms. High near 75°F.

LOCAL NEWS AND COMMUNITY UPDATES
Placer County restarts planning for the Dollar Creek Crossing site
The county is reopening the 11-acre site near Tahoe City to a competitive development process after its agreement with Related Companies expired June 30. A new request for proposals is expected in 2027.
Investigators document 28 poisoned trees at Burnt Cedar Beach
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office believes three tree-poisoning incidents in 2022, 2024 and 2026 are connected. Sixteen pine trees were affected this year, bringing the total to 28 and the estimated damage to $300,000. Secret Witness is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and prosecution.
Arrest made in the Crystal Peak wildfire investigation
A Reno woman was arrested Aug. 5 after investigators determined that a vegetation fire near Crystal Peak Mine in Dog Valley began at her campsite. She was booked on suspicion of unlawfully causing a fire on forest land and additional drug-related charges. Crews brought the fire under control.
Gateway Park environmental review opens
Placer County has started environmental review of the proposed Gateway Park near Emigrant Gap. The project includes a nature center, community park, lake access, trails, snow play and 50 overnight cabins and treehouses. Public comments on the scope of the environmental review are due Aug. 31.
TDPUD launches its water conservation campaign
California’s new conservation rules begin Jan. 1, 2027, with community-wide targets for indoor use, outdoor irrigation and water loss. Compliance will be measured across the Truckee community, not household by household, with no individual monitoring or fines. TDPUD is also expanding education and rebate programs to help customers reduce water use.
TRAIL REPORT
Summer trail conditions are in full effect. Plan early starts Monday and Tuesday to avoid the hottest part of the day, then watch for fast-changing skies and afternoon thunderstorms beginning Wednesday.
Truckee Trails is continuing work on the 1.2-mile North Bald Mountain Connection in the Sawtooth network. The new section will connect with the Back-cut Trail completed last fall.
On the West Shore, the Meeks Ridge Trail is now fully funded for the 2026 construction season. The project is approximately 75% complete, with crews working through the final technical sections toward Lost Lake.
Forest restoration projects may temporarily affect trails and roads around Alder Creek, Highway 89 and Alpine Meadows. Check the current project and closure map before heading out and follow all posted closure signs.
FISHING REPORT
According to the Aug. 6 report from Four Seasons Fly Fishing, cool nights are helping keep the Truckee River in good shape during the first half of the day.
The upper river from Tahoe City to the Boca inflow has been reaching 67-68°F by noon, while the section below Boca has generally remained fishable until around 4pm. Morning fishing is the best bet. Follow your thermometer and stop fishing as temperatures approach stressful levels for trout.
Dry-fly fishing remains productive, with midges, caddis, BWOs and tricos in the mix. Smaller flies and lighter tippet may help with increasingly selective fish.
The Little Truckee was running at a lower seasonal flow of approximately 47 cfs, with cooler water temperatures of 54-56°F during the middle of the day. Fish are looking up, but the lower flows make careful presentations and extra space between anglers especially important.
